PERIODONTAL THERAPY
A beautiful smile is important to your appearance and your health. Gum disease or periodontitis can jeopardize your teeth and even put you at risk for other health issues such as stroke, diabetes and cardiovascular problems. At Meridian Campus Family Dental, we take gum disease seriously and can offer periodontal therapy as part of our general dentistry services that can treat, even reverse the effects of periodontitis, helping you retain a healthy, beautiful smile.

Periodontal disease begins slowly with bacteria collecting in the crevices around the teeth. These bacteria create plaque and tartar that can cause gum inflammation and pockets between the gums and teeth. As these pockets become larger they can become further infected, leading your body’s immune system to respond to fight the infection. This can cause bone and tissue loss surrounding the teeth, undermining the structure holding teeth in place. Left unchecked, this can lead to tooth loss and bacteria entering the bloodstream, putting you at higher risk for other health issues.

TREATMENT FOR PERIODONTITIS

The good news is that periodontitis can be treated effectively through periodontal therapy. At Meridian Campus Family Dental, we start by a thorough examination of your teeth and gums during your checkup. Our dental hygienist will measure the pockets in your gums and Dr. Carpenter will evaluate your digital x-rays to determine the extent of periodontal disease before offering a solution for treatment.

DEEP CLEANING, SCALING AND ROOT PLANING

Those with periodontal disease need a deeper cleaning to remove all the bacteria from the deep pockets in the gums to curtail the infection. Scaling and root planing are often recommended to remove plaque and tartar below the gum line using special instruments and ultrasonic devices. Depending on the extent of the disease, Dr. Carpenter may also recommend home treatments and possibly other procedures that can help remove the source of infection and protect your teeth from further damage.

It is not too late to improve your oral health. Periodontal therapy can vastly improve your gum health and prevent any further bone loss from infection, protecting your beautiful smile. Contact us today at Meridian Campus Family Dental to begin treatment for your gum disease.
